Tamales are a very popular food throughout Central and South America. There are records of tamales being eaten in the time of the Inca Empire, which proves they have been an important staple in the Peruvian diet for centuries. The definition of a tamale varies from country to country, and even from city to city. Some Peruvian tamales are wrapped in banana leaves, and others are made with corn husks. They are made with either white or yellow corn. Some are spicy and contain chile peppers. Common fillings include chicken, boiled eggs, olives and sometimes even peanuts. The tamale in the photo to the right was made in a Pachamanca, the traditional Peruvian cooking method in the Huancayo region. Peruvian Tamales
Friday, August 27th, 2010Back to Our CT Peruvian Restaurant
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010
We’re back from another trip to Peru. While we were there, we ate in small restaurants and large restaurants, both upscale and “hole in the wall” places. We found that some of the best food came from the simplest places. This reminds us that homestyle, traditional dishes are what Peruvian food is all about. Eating a gourmet meal is nice every one in a while, but it’s the simple dishes we enjoy each day that make Peruvian food special. This is the kind of food we aim to serve at our CT Peruvian Restaurant. If you’re interested in learning more about Peruvian food, check out Mama Tina’s Peruvian Food to learn about some of the common ingredients and how they are used.

After this beautiful Memorial Day weekend, we are all ready for the beach, the pool, and more sunshine. And of course, the perfect summer lunch or dinner, Ceviche! This cold seafood dish is light and fresh, and a great choice on a hot day. Try one of our specialties, Ceviche de Camarones (shrimp), Pescado (fresh fish of the day), or Mixto (a variety of seafood and fish, including octopus and mussels) and you will not be disappointed. Peruvians are very proud of their excellent Ceviche, which is one of the most popular dishes at our Peruvian restaurant in Norwalk.

Peruvian Food for Vegetarians
Thursday, January 14th, 2010For vegetarians, the average Peruvian restaurant menu may be intimidating at first. After all, there are a variety of steak, poultry, and fish dishes. However, there are some Peruvian specialties that do not contain meat or fish. Papa a la Huancaina, our most popular appetizer, is a great choice. Boiled potatoes and a creamy aji saucce make a great combination. One of our specials that is offered from time to time, the Choclo con Queso, is a plate of large Andean corn topped with a creamy cheese sauce. Tallarines Verdes is available often, and consists of Peruvian style pesto sauce over noodles. Of course, salad, rice and beans are always available at our CT Peruvian restaurant as well.
A Trendy Peruvian Drink at our CT Peruvian Restaurant
Wednesday, January 13th, 2010
The Los Angeles times has just published an article on the rebirth of Pisco in the US, explaining the history of this liquor, and discussing its recent popularity with Americans. Although some people may think of Pisco as a new drink in America, writer Nicholas Gill explains that it was actually the drink of choice in San Francisco during the Gold Rush in California in the 19th century, when ships would stop in the port of Pisco for supplies. Then Prohibition went into effect, along with a list of other issues that made trade difficult for Peru. Even after the era of Prohibition, Chile took over Pisco exporting, leaving Peru with a very small percentage of the market. However, a recent focus on the excellent Piscos now being produced in Peru has caused a greater demand for in in the US. Top bars in cities like Manhattan and Boston are now serving a variety of cocktails made with Peruvian Pisco, and it’s becoming a trendy drink choice. See what all the fuss is about by trying a Pisco Sour at Fiesta Limena CT Peruvian restaurant.
