Avocados from Peru

Many people are not aware that varieties of both black and green-skinned avocados are native to Peru. The varied Peruvian climate actually provides some of the best areas in the world for growing avocados. Traditionally, they are grown in the higher elevations, along riverbeds and their flood zones, and in tropical areas. However, Haas avocados are now being grown in the coastal desert area as well. Many of these avocados are exported to grocery stores in Canada and Europe. In Peruvian cooking, avocados are used in dishes such as Causa, a layered potato salad, and creamy sauces.
